ITPE is a trusted advisor providing client-focused, commercially minded, energy and environmental consulting services to clients in onshore & offshore energy, transport & infrastructure, property and corporate sectors.
We deliver feasibility, environmental planning and technical support on environmental assessments for a range of developments. Key areas of specialist advice include the feasibility and consenting phases through to post-submission support and construction environmental management.
By understanding our clients’ expectations, financing and attitude to risk through screening, scoping and environmental impact assessment (EIA) we help to optimise the approach to achieving consent, with deliverable conditions and a buildable project.
One of our key strengths is in managing and coordinating EIAs, and delivering high-quality Environmental Statements (ES). We have extensive experience in managing the EIA process, from Screening and Scoping through to delivering the final ES and Non-Technical Summary. This includes regulatory consultation, coordination of the technical delivery team, close liaison with the project planning consultant, engineers, architects, and designers, and overall ES compilation and review.
However, we recognize that at times clients may only require certain specialist assessments to input into an EIA led by others or a development may not require an EIA. In these instances, we can provide as many or as few individual technical assessments as required. A summary of our capability in the various technical disciplines typically required as part of an EIA or planning application for a wide range of development types is set out below.
Landscape/townscape and visual amenity
Our specialists work have experience of landscape, townscape and visual impact assessment (LVIA/TVIA), as well as options appraisal and route/site selection advice, feasibility investigations and advice and conceptual visualisations. They input into design development and provide landscape support to ecological enhancement, environmental management and monitoring.
Ecology and ornithology
We undertake all habitat and protected species surveys (Phase 1 habitat, national vegetation classification, bat, badger, otter, water vole, great crested newt, red squirrel, wildcat, pine marten, reptiles), tree surveys and invasive species surveys as well as aerial tree inspections (NPTC certified).
We can undertake all bird surveys (breeding bird, wintering walkover, breeding raptor, vantage point, black grouse, owl, divers) and prepare and manage licence applications. We offer advice on mitigation measures and biodiversity enhancement and act as Ecological Clerk of Works, give toolbox talks and monitor construction.
We prepare all ecological reporting and ecological impact assessment, bird collision risk modelling, Habitat Regulations Assessments, input into planning applications and discharge of planning conditions, ecology BREEAM assessment and reporting.
Hydrology, geology, hydrogeology (including peat)
We prepare geo-environmental desk studies and Phase 1 assessments for proposed developments and property transactions, considering land contamination, ground conditions and other potential geo-environmental liabilities.
Our capabilities include geology, hydrology and hydrogeology baseline studies and impact assessments, Environmental Statement chapters for various development types (residential, commercial, industrial, renewable energy, road, rail, energy transmission & distribution, flood mitigation works). We also undertake Stage 1 Flood Risk Assessments for both private and public sector clients.
We perform peat probing investigations, prepare peat hazard mapping and Peat Slide Risk Assessments. Our team also undertakes carbon balance calculations and assessments.
Noise and air quality
Our team undertakes noise monitoring, modelling and impact assessment, advising on noise mitigation strategies, and inputting in to BREEAM on acoustics.
We also undertake air quality modelling, prepare PPC/permitting applications, formulating best available technique arguments and involving atmospheric dispersion modelling and impact assessments for a number of sectors, including road traffic, biomass (waste wood) combustion, distilleries, energy from waste, and volatile organic compound emissions, which can be used for both consenting and permitting requirements.
Socio-economics, recreation and tourism
We prepare baseline studies, collate data, and undertake research, surveys and analysis and report findings in Environmental Statement chapters. We have experience of a wide variety of development types including wind farms, major mixed use and residential developments.
Materials and waste management
We undertake materials and waste assessment and reporting, principally for large-scale property development. We work with project engineers to consider cut and /fill options, advising on re-use of materials, construction waste minimisation and management. We advise on operational waste management such as waste minimisation, waste and recycling storage and facilities (working with project architects).
Telecommunications/links and television impacts
Applicable primarily to wind farm and residential tower developments, this involves consultation with spectrum licensing and link operators, plotting of link details to assess potential conflict with development, recommending mitigation measures, on-site verification of link end details, negotiation with link operators to agree mitigation and/or planning conditions and reporting findings in an Environmental Statement chapter.
Shadow flicker (wind)
This is particular to wind farm developments and involves shadow flicker modelling and assessment, consultation with local authorities to confirm methodology and acceptability criteria, and reporting in an Environmental Statement chapter.
We undertake Sustainability appraisals and prepare statements to accompany planning applications for various development types. We manage sustainability workshops as part of stakeholder engagement, identify objectives and advise on actions for meeting objectives. We prepare energy strategies and advise on renewables deployment as well as advise on the sustainability of construction projects.
